THE MATERIAL HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE (Class Full)
Arising from the ashes of Rome, the Medieval period gave birth to modern western civilization. Knowledge of this era is essential to understanding subsequent history.This course will study and discuss the society, economy, and culture of Medieval Europe, including everyday life for the different classes of society. Topics such as hunger, war, plague, marriage, and relations between the classes will be discussed.
Class 1. Introduction to the middle Ages. A brief discussion of what brought on the Dark Ages , the fall of Rome, barbarians, the early middle ages, middle period and the late middle ages.
Class 2. Those who worked. A discussion of the common classes, craft classes and merchant class
Class 3. Those who prayed. The church and its divisions
Class 4. Those who fought. The nobility and its divisions
Class 5. Economics of the time
Class 6. Culture and the way of thinking
Class 7. The plagues and the new economy
Class 8. Love, sexuality, marriage
Leader: Stanley Saperstein has studied the material history of the Middle Ages and has visited many important sites in Europe.
