LATIN AMERICAN POLITICS AND DEVELOPMENT (Class Full)

The seminar will examine the politics and recent history of the following Latin American countries: Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, and Costa Rica. Major themes will include the impact of the cold war, causes of military intervention, the breakdown and reestablishment of democracy, approaches to economic development, and the tensions and contradictions of US policy towards the region. A basic text will be used along with recommended readings

The text for the course is Howard Wiarda and Harvey Kline (eds.), "Latin
American Politics and Development", published by WestView Press.The seventh
edition will be published August 3, 2010.  Used copies of the sixth edition
are available from Amazon Books. 

 
Leader: Paul E. Sigmund, Professor of Politics Emeritus, has taught Latin American politics at Princeton University for over 40 years.
