The Arts and Crafts Movement, which began as a reaction to the negative social and cultural impact of the industrial revolution, marked the end of the design excess of the Victorian era in architecture and the decorative arts. Much of the energy for change in the United States was the work of Gustav Stickley, social idealist, furniture maker and publisher of the Craftsman, a national magazine that helped reshape the look and style of life in this country. This course will examine the European origins of the movement and the development and proliferation of Arts and Crafts style in the United States, with an accent on Stickley and his contributions, in preparation for a docent-led visit to a major exhibition of Stickley furniture at the Newark Museum. This course is a repeat of an earlier one.
