Get Moving with FitRhythms™! February 2008
January seems to be the month that many people make new year’s resolutions to get exercise. It is also the hardest time of year to get exercise outdoors, whether lawn mowing, gardening, walking or biking. The old exercise videotapes get dusted off, gym memberships get renewed, promises get made. But many inwardly groan when it’s time to start because they do not enjoy these activities, and the resolutions dissolve. There are some novel newer alternatives, such as mall walking, where people walk the level, warm, sheltered halls of the mall in the hour before it opens to retail business. It is also an opportunity to make new friends while you walk. PSRC has received a grant from the State of New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services to introduce a new exercise program called FitRhythms™ . It involves movement and light weight rhythm instruments. It is flexible to adapt to all levels of fitness and you do not need musical aptitude. In fact, while having fun you can burn 9 calories a minute—more than biking! What is FitRhythms™? FitRhythms™ is a revolutionary new workout created by Paulo Mattioli that combines the proven mind/body benefits of group drumming and dance into an exciting and uplifting workout. It is a fun, full-body, rhythmical workout in which anyone can successfully participate. FitRhythms™ is a noncompetitive, non-intimidating fitness program that fosters community, creativity, fitness and wellness through the process of dance and group music making. All that is required to successfully participate in FitRhythms™ is a willingness to share your rhythm, dance and essence in a way that supports the group experience. There are no steps or rhythms to learn and no performance pressure. It is safe yet challenging for all fitness levels because it is self-paced. No need for a partner. PSRC’s Program Director, Mauri Tyler, is trained to facilitate FitRhythms and HealthRhythms. She says the benefits of group music making are not limited by age. In fact, group music making offers an important benefit to mature adults in stress reduction. The Wall Street Journal reports that after the “big 3” factors that everyone agrees increase longevity – diet, exercise, and not smoking - the fourth factor in improving longevity and quality of life is the ability to offload stress. No one can avoid stress. The people who can keep it from sticking or can offload it the fastest, are the healthiest. Group music making is an enjoyable, effective way to release stress. So get your blood circulating, your body moving, and make a few new friends. Give it a try this March! Join us at Elm Court on Wednesdays at 3:00pm, starting March 12th.
