Are You Prepared? October 2005
Are You Prepared? October 2005
One of the lessons we seem to be learning from Hurricane Katrina is that realistically, people may have to fend for themselves for 72 hours until emergency responders can get there. It is recommended that you have these items in a duffel or place where they can be packed quickly. Remember to re-supply items that have expiration dates. These suggestions are gathered from the Red Cross website and the New York Times.
- Water: 1 gallon per person per day for drinking and washing
- Food: canned foods and drinks (and opener), ready-to-eat foods, nutrition bars or drinks, any special foods you need, comfort foods
- Medications: at least a week’s supply
- Flashlight(s): crank or batteries
- Radio: crank or solar, or extra batteries
- Compact multi-tool
- First aid kit: bandages, sanitizer, gloves, face shield, antibiotic, tape, scissors
- Unscented Bleach
- Cash/Travelers checks
- Blankets
- Mess kit, utensils
- Method for cooking if possible (camp stove, fuel, matches)
- Paper & pencil/pen
- Basic sewing kit
- Duct Tape
- Important documents in water-proof bag: medical, passwords, household inventory, bank accounts, insurance, home & family records
Also, have your family agree on a person who does not live in your community as a crisis contact person. If you get separated, you can each call that person to check in.
If you have to leave home, make sure you take your wallet, glasses, and personal aids (teeth, hearing aids, etc). If you have time, take some entertainment to pass the time.
