1:30 PM Free Speech in a “Post-Truth” World – Evergreen Forum (MH)

October 29, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

The mainstream media are under intense attack, while social media foster hyper-partisanship and provide outlets for hate speech and right-wing conspiracy theories. The president of the US dominates Twitter and dismisses all criticism as “fake news.” Technology abets the rise of bots and other disguises for malevolent actors.  Hacking proliferates. Is the First Amendment even relevant in a world of “alternative facts?” What will it take for freedom of speech and the press, as we have understood them, to survive? These are some of the questions to be addressed in this participatory course.

Leader: Elaine Jacoby is a retired attorney.

Tuesdays: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., 8 weeks: September 24 through November 19 (no class on 10/8)
